The Scriptures

Written by Pat Klein

I love the Scriptures! Even though I’ve been reading them for many years, somehow each time the Holy Spirit speaks a fresh thought to me. Encouragement, comfort, instruction, a challenge, something that reminds me of His awesome greatness - there’s always a bite of nourishment that fits my heart for that time.

Amazing! Precious! Even life-giving!

Today, Isaiah 50:4-5 grabbed my attention. I thought about it, and compared a few different translations:

4. The Lord God has given me the tongue of disciples,
that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word.
(or ‘to speak a word in season to him’)
He awakens me morning by morning,
He awakens my ear to listen as a disciple.

5. The Lord God has opened my ear; And I was not disobedient nor did I turn back. (New American Standard)

And from New Living Translation:

4. The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom,
so that I know how to comfort the weary.
Morning by morning he wakens me
and opens my understanding to his will.

5. The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me, and I have listened. I have not rebelled or turned away.

I found myself responding - Lord, I want to be more effective for you with my words! To speak a word in season. To encourage. To build up. To introduce a truth to counteract despair.

As we spend time with Him, He draws us closer. As we consider the truths of His overarching plan, His care for each person, no matter their faith background, or their life experiences, He shapes us and expands our heart.

The Lord God has given me the tongue of disciples, that I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word.
The Sovereign Lord has spoken to me, and I have listened.

My response - help me, Lord to listen carefully.

And, then a few minutes later, I was given this from Psalm 57:2 and 7:

I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill His purpose for me. My heart is confident in You, oh God!

Walking into 2026, I’m acutely aware that most of my pre-ordained time here on earth is behind me, rather than ahead of me. Still, I walk with fresh confidence today, because God will fulfill His purposes for me.

Friends, as we’re all standing at the beginning of 2026, may we be listening for our Father’s word to our hearts for this season. Be assured again that He’s been shaping you through the years. And He is pleased to fulfil His purposes for you for this new year, despite its challenges!
