The Lord Determines Our Steps

Written by Debby Baril

He slipped his little hand into mine. Was he 3, maybe closer to 4? Does he speak English, French, or another language altogether? We walk together for what must have seemed to his little legs a very long time, my thumb gently caressing the back of his small hand, my eyes scanning each corridor looking for any sign of recognition. One person, then another, “Is that the boy who is lost?” I nod yes, as they point me in the direction they last saw the mother frantically searching, running from one store to the next.

Then finally, it happens, his little hand slips out of mine as he runs into the arms of his mother, who holds him close. I see her beautiful face, and in that moment, I feel her every emotion – fear, dread, guilt, panic, then relief and joy amidst her many thank-yous. Others begin to surround the family. I quietly slip away, my hand empty, my heart full.

Funny thing is - the store I had set out for wasn’t even in that mall.

These moments remind us that God is actively involved in the details of our lives, directing our steps according to His purposes. For my purpose, I was in the wrong mall; for God’s purpose, I was in the right mall.

Delays, detours, unexpected turns, and unintended encounters can lead to unimagined opportunities. Our usefulness is not attached to positions and pulpits, Bible studies and prayer meetings, but everyday moments of simply doing life.

Let us move faithfully toward the vision and mission our God has called us to, while allowing room for the ministry that comes in the simple day-to-day happenings. Expect the unexpected.

An unplanned phone call, a last-minute guest, a “chance” meeting, can lead to meaningful encounters and opportunities for connection that have far-reaching impact beyond what we may realize.

An unexpected turn in a conversation can bring timely words of hope and freedom, while a last-minute change in plans can bring us across someone who needs to unburden their heart.

A simple gift given can reinforce a person’s value when they are struggling with a sense of their worth. A kind gesture can remind them they are seen, while a bright smile and gentle hug can confirm God’s love.

Being in the right place at the right time is in the Lord’s hands, not our planned schedules.

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps (Proverbs 16:9 NLT).

When the unexpected presents itself, changing the course of our plans, let’s learn how to take a deep breath and find God’s purpose in the moment.
