Our God is Sovereign

Written by Pat Klein

Abraham was the father of Isaac

  • who was the father of Jacob

  • who was the father of Judah (who had sex with a woman he thought was a prostitute)

  • who was the father of Perez

  • who was the father of Hezron

  • who was the father of Ram

  • who was the father of Amminadab

  • who was the father of Nahshon

  • who was the father of Salmon (who married Rahab, the Canaanite prostitute)

  • who was the father of Boaz (who married Ruth the Moabite)

  • who was the father of Obed

  • who was the father of Jesse

  • who was the father of King David

How could this be? How could Abraham, the man God selected to be the Father of His chosen people, the man whose unquestioning faith in Almighty God is held up as the great example of faith, the man destined to be the great ancestor of the Saviour of the world, how could there end up being such “messes” in his descendants’ families? What kind of God would let that happen? And if that God, in amazing love, planned to give his only Son as the Saviour of the world, how could He let that Saviour’s bloodline be ‘contaminated’ by outsiders? And even by outsiders of ill-repute?

The answer of course, is that God let all that happen because He wants you and me to be included! Otherwise, we would have had no chance at all of knowing Him. Amazing!

Our God is a Sovereign God who knows even the far-off future – who sees the outsider and moves on their behalf.

These days, the world is shocked when a powerful country suddenly invades its smaller neighbour, expecting to easily and completely overrule it. Atrocities abound, children are snatched away, hospitals and housing blocks are bombed to rubble, yet still the people hold on. Then reports start surfacing – dozens, hundreds, even thousands of people are calling on God. Churches spring up everywhere. There will come a time when the oppressors will face righteous judgment. Because …

Our God is Sovereign! He watches every movement of the nations.

Today, are you feeling:

  • that so much that used to feel stable and reliable is now shaking?

  • that outright lying, blatant sexual immorality, cruelty to the weaker ones - these things are no longer even socially sanctioned?

  • Are you sometimes uncertain how to greet neighbours who’ve moved into the neighbourhood, who look different, speak different languages, live very differently? Do you even wonder if they may be a threat?

  • Do you feel left behind by technology, AI?

  • Are the young people in your circles putting forward positions very different from everything you’ve always assumed?

Remember, our God is a Sovereign God! We can anchor our thoughts, our emotions, and our hope in Him!

“For by his great power he rules forever. He watches every movement of the nations.” (Psalm 66:7a) NLT

“He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice and the nations with his truth.” (Psalm 96:13) NLT

“Those who are wise … will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord.” (Psalm 107:43) NLT

Take heart, my friends. On Christ the solid Rock we stand. All other ground is sinking sand.
