Our Amazing Amazing God
Written by Pat Klein
When I first learned about light-years, I remember trying to imagine the distance. NASA tells us light travels 186,000 miles (300,000 km) per second. So in one year, it travels 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion kilometres). A plane travelling at 600 m/h (965 km/h) would take 1 million years to travel one light-year.
Now consider this. Recently, a new powerful telescope/digital camera at the Vera C Rubin Observatory in Chile has released images of space 9,000 light-years from Earth! The image is a small part of one of those many images.

Genesis 1:15 tells us: “He (God) also made the stars.”
Mind-blowing!
Recently, at a summer family gathering, one of our bright young adults was excited to tell me about the research she’s been doing into nanoparticles in our bodies (oligodeoxynucleotides). Apparently, they hold promise of helping our immune responses. Future applications of this research may help develop anti-cancer and anti-pathogenic therapies.
She said, “When I first stained and observed connective tissue under a fluorescent microscope, I couldn’t hold back my tears — it was so beautiful! The blue stain binds to nucleic acids (in this case DNA), and the green stain is bound to the treatment, which we see spreading across the intracellular matrix.”

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body, … Your workmanship is marvellous!” (Psalm 139:13-14 NLB)
The God of the unfathomably vast universe, is the God of the unfathomably tiny nanoparticles in the human body!
Now consider this. God knows the past - stretching back to before the world began. And He knows the future into eternity.
One example: about 700 BC, He inspired Isaiah to write, “He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins, … struck down for the rebellion of my people … put in a rich man’s grave… (Isaiah 53) Those details and many more actually happened to Jesus of Nazareth - but centuries later!
And He says that at some point: “The Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the arch-angel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, believers who’ve died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we (believers) who are still alive on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we’ll be with the Lord forever.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 NLT)
I’m strengthened in my core being when I consider that God is The Strongest One - more powerful than haughty politicians and others who so often cause incredible human suffering. He is Sovereign. He has a plan. He has purposes in postponing judgement - partly to allow time for people to turn to Him.
Yes, I’m strengthened when I consider that God is in fact ALMIGHTY!
But I’m even more strengthened when He miraculously lets me know that He’s with me, and that He knows what’s going on in my life. He knows what I’m feeling. He knows when I’m lonely. He knows when I’ve lost something important. He knows when I’m about to make a potentially costly mistake. Over and over I see him bring details together in my day. Looking back over my life I can see such an amazing plan: my early training & experiences are being used to help others these days, even in my retirement years.
I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands
I have a Father
He calls me his own
He’ll never leave me
No matter where I roam.
He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And hears me when I call
(Tommy Walker, 2000)
Our God is so incredible! He’s the God of the vast, and He’s the God of the intricate detail. He’s in charge of the universe, and He pays close attention to each of us. He’s an amazing, amazing God!
Each night when I reflect on my day, may I consider if I lived it ignoring Him, or if I gave the thanks and honour and love due to this Amazing, Amazing God.
