Let Him Be Our Vice

Written by Melissa Sharpe

It is a complicated world riddled with complicated people and complicated problems. Every day seems to be a struggle to hear His voice when we are trying to juggle our every life choice. It is a struggle to seek His affection when we are fighting for the world's attention. But God's Word is not ignorant of these struggles nor the complications of being human. There is nothing that escapes his vision.

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:15-17).

It would seem now more than ever in modern history we, Christ's followers, bear witness to the things of this world passing away with its desires at a rapid rate. Modern technology is changing minute to minute; moment to moment something newer, shinier, and more desirable teases us into change. We are constantly being distracted by the horrors of humankind. The desires of our flesh in constant competition with the desires of our heart. The pride of life evident in where we invest our most precious of resources.

And when it all becomes too much to handle, too overwhelming to our soul and heavy for our heart, we turn to our vices to calm the inner conflict and confusion.

For it is human to seek comfort. It is human to seek calm. It is human to seek contentment.

It is averse to the ways of this world to seek Him.

And sometimes the most difficult of questions to ask ourselves is what it is that we use to replace Him when we are faced with too much of everything? No one knows us better than Him. He knows what it is that breaks us down and builds us up. He knows what we need before we need it and what were thinking before we think it.

So, if this day, this minute, this moment, finds you burdened, overpowered, and underwhelmed by the curiosities of this world, let us remember the greatest of advice. Let Him be our vice.

The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. (Psalm 14:2)
